Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has backtracked on a crucial Israeli compromise in ceasefire discussions, insisting that armed individuals should not be allowed to reenter northern Gaza once a ceasefire is established, as per an Israeli insider briefed on the negotiations by CNN.
Israel had previously consented to granting Palestinians complete and unimpeded access to northern Gaza in the event of a ceasefire. However, the Israeli Prime Minister instructed his negotiating team this week to insist that armed individuals be prohibited from entering northern Gaza as a condition for any ceasefire and hostage agreement, as per the source.
The recent request has the potential to disrupt advancements in hostage discussions and prompts additional inquiries regarding Netanyahu's dedication to Israel's proposed deal, which serves as the foundation for in-depth negotiations."
The previous week, a US official informed CNN that a preliminary agreement had been established, while an Israeli official confirmed that Netanyahu had given permission for his negotiators to engage in thorough discussions, indicating a possible advancement. Discussions recommenced in the Qatari city of Doha last Friday. Hamas agreed to make concessions on a significant issue for Israel over the weekend,
requiring the Jewish state to commit to a lasting ceasefire in Gaza prior to finalizing an agreement. The Israeli prime minister’s office released a statement on Sunday that raised doubts about the progress of the deal, outlining certain “principles” that Israel is not willing to compromise on. These principles include the continuation of fighting in Gaza until all war objectives are met.
Nine months ago, Israel initiated a war against Gaza in retaliation to an attack by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the taking of over 250 hostages, as reported by Israeli authorities. The conflict has caused extensive damage to Gaza, displacing nearly the entire population and resulting in the deaths of over 38,000 individuals, according to the health ministry in Gaza. Israel has maintained that the war will not cease until all hostages are released and Hamas is eradicated.
